I have the same issue as well with ATI Mobile HD 5000 Series on HP
Probook 4321s laptop.

- Xorg and compiz occupy enormous CPU resources while ubuntu is on 
screen-auto-suspend or battery-mode.
- Reloading Compiz or Unity makes the system responsive again.
- In the case on battery-mode, plugging AC power is not a immediately solution.
  My laptop needs 2~5 minutes to be normalized after plugging AC power.
- But I can't find critical error message in /var/log/xorg.0.log
- I can reproduce this every time.
