I did this test with the mainline kernel 3.5-rc7-quantal; short answer -
no improvement. Details follow.
When I booted, I had no GUI configured, and could not select anything in the
menus in order to run a simplified GUI.
Instead, I dropped out of Xorg, to a shell and ran sudo pm-suspend, which
suspended my laptop as expected. The behaviour is exactly as with the standard
distribution kernel; the lights are on, the fans are spinning, but the screen
is not awake.
