Thanks for the response, Lasker.  In my opinion the behaviour seems to be
inconsistent with the rest of the desktop. Media files are played even
without extensions. Archives are opened correctly without extensions. But
Deb packages fail halfway through the operation (halfway since the
appropriate program is opened).
I don't see opening them as a security risk since in any case the install
button needs to be pressed explicitly and a password needs to be given for
actual installation. Would it be possible to check for the validity of the
package without checking the extension?
