I don't know if it's related, however, according to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/beagleboard/NrBDNW- rWD0/JR24XVqeol4J beagleboard xM (the version I am using) doesn't not support passive microphone but only powered microphone or line in. Maybe microphone is not detected for this issue.
