Ok, so I tried installing the latest oneiric kernal through the mainline
builds. However, this failed on loadup with the first error being:
'Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown
block (0,0)"

So I then tried to install the 3.0.27 kernel from here:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/ following these
instructions: http://mitchtech.net/compile-linux-kernel-
ubuntu-12-04-lts/ . However this has not shown up in grub (even after
doing a sudo update-grub). I didn't really go through the graphical
configuration part (as I was under the impression the 'oldconfing' and
'localmodconfig' took care of setting the defaults).

I cannot tell you from memory that a previous kernel works either, as
this is the very first Ubuntu OS I have installed on this computer (this
computer is a couple of weeks old or so). Should I try to go back
further in kernel history to find a kernel that works, or persist on
finding a solution to making the oneiric kernel work (or something else
entirely)?
