I have a dell studio xps 1340
Same type of failure with both arch and the latest ubuntu live cd
I made it boot up with using
and adding
acpi = off
pnpbios=off
to the boot options
I haven't tried an install yet, but probably you will need to add this
to your default boot options for your new install to work as well.
I will try it later in the next couple days and post back
