Lucy O'Neill's a genius.  Her fix worked for me. I'm running a Dell
Inspiron 1720 with an NVidia card.  Here's what I did

gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Replaced e the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" with
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=on" and saved the file

sudo update-grub

Rebooted (I had to hold the power button)

Shutdown (Did not have to hold the power button)
