Updaetd mesa yesterday and the font rendering problem is resolved.
Disabling nautilus desktop management via gnome-tweak-tool (screenshots added 
below) causes the blue screen overlay to disappear, nevertheless windows still 
aren't visible. In the attached screenshot there's a "Settings" window (blue 
one) and a terminal window (white outline one).
