Initially I liked this idea, but now I don't. The reason I don't like it
is because a count badge either means there are a number of things that
need attention, or a number of temporary things in progress. In both of
those cases, knowing the count is important and it should distract the
user, getting their attention.

Having items in the trash however is not important and should not
usually get the user's attention... Unless there are too many items in
the trash. So maybe what we want is a threshold. Something like 10% of
your disk, or 100 files, or something. Only when there are too many
items in the trash, should the user be asked to care about it. If at
all.
