I have problems with this feature as well. After searching a bit online, I am pretty sure that this is actually the problem upstream, and that it is already fixed:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=303269 In short it is about ktorrent taking just the first of the trackers in the magnet link, and it tends to be a slow tracker that times out, so you have to wait a lot. With a little tampering you can go around this - use "open url", than paste the magnet link, and delete some of the trackers in the url (they start with &tr=). You add the same link several times with different trackers deleted (leave just one) until it works.
