The problem has ceased to be a problem in one of the recent releases. In
precise I can boot with an external hdd connected without any problem at
all. If needed I will try booting the quantal livedvd with an external
hdd attahed if that helps you. I also noticed that attaching an external
hdd while already booted from external hdd will mak the boot hdd unmount
for some time leading to a freezeup of the system. That isnt so much of
a problem since all hdds that are to be used could be connected before
teh system is turned on.
