Thanks David, I can confirm libpam-smbpass is already installed and services were restarted after making the change. The results are the same. Full system also rebooted for good measure.
There seems to be something iffy with the permissions: The rpcclient output for "enumprivs" is identical for both a member and non-member of the lpadmin group. I'm sure your fix will solve my problem, just as soon as I get my permissions in check.
