I don't think the CPU/GPU is the issue. It appears to be fairly new
(http://ark.intel.com/products/63915).

Could you please run ccsm (from the package "compizconfig-settings-manager"), 
and...
1. Desktop > Ubuntu Unity Plugin > Enable Ubuntu Unity Plugin = UNTICKED. Keep 
CCSM open!
2. Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal window.
3. Close the terminal window. Is it faster now?
4. Re-enable Unity: Desktop > Ubuntu Unity Plugin > Enable Ubuntu Unity Plugin 
= TICKED
5. Repeats steps 2-3. Is it slower now Unity is running again?
