I installed the proposed changes and performed a VPN (PPTP) connection a Windows 2008 Server. I initiated the connection via the Unity Network GUI (Right-click network icon, VPN -> MyVPN Connection). The proposed changes worked for me (Ubuntu 12.04 x64 desktop). The resolv.conf file is no longer being populated with DNS servers obtained via the VPN connection.
