OK, I tried those steps, and what I discovered is that the time lag occurs for programs that would be expected to close slowly, like the system performance monitor. Those programs close slowly whether Unity is enabled or not, and a terminal window closes fast in both modes (with and without Unity.) I seem to recall terminal windows also closing slowly, but apparently not.
