I was able to alleviate this problem by removing e1000 and e1000e
modules.

sudo modprobe -r e1000
sudo modprobe -r e1000e

I tried adding them both to /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf as blacklisted
which seemed to apply to e1000 but e1000e was still loaded and caused
watchdog and kworker to beat the heck out of my CPU.

blacklist e1000
blacklist e1000e

I'm running an IBM Lenovo T61 with an old battery that has about 40%
charging capacity left. As everyone else seems to experience when
unplugged the problem vanishes and my ethernet port lights are also on
all the time.

For now I'll just remove the e1000e manually and pray the kernel gods
that be bestow us with a patched kernel or better temporary fix.

Don't worry Linux, I still love you!
