For simplicity's sake the work around (and it worked for me) summarized from 
Peter Clifton's comment on #121228 is:
1) killall nm-applet, or let it crash

2) Delete the gconf entries with:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /system/networking/wireless/networks/<SSID>
where <SSID> is your network's SSID

3) Open gnome-keyring-manager, and delete your saved keys

4) restart nm-applet

5) Reconnect to your network(s) and re-enter your keys
