bladernr@klaatu:~$ uptime
 08:47:07 up 11:43, 1 user, load average: 0.89, 0.32, 0.20

I ran a simulated stress test for 8 hours on it overnight, and have
nearly 12 hours uptime with no problems at all.

I should add that the second problem (the touchpad going wonky requiring
me to rmmod psmouse ALSO seems to have went away with the quantal kernel
3.5.0-7.

Yesterday with the current Precise kernel running, the touchpad would go
wonky after about 5 - 15 minutes uptime, requiring me to remove the
psmouse module completely and just just my USB mouse. the Set Keycode
error messages would appear within an hour, max, and I had to reboot the
machine 4 times yesterday while running the precise kernel due to these
issues.

So I'm going to say that 3.5.0-7 Quantal LTS Backport fixes the problem
too.

What kernel should I try next?
