When time permits: I don't have a free partition on the
machine in question; I'll try an install on a USB stick
when I can.

Done. The lateness of this response is because the bug
is intermittent: I've had to spend time with the upstream
kernel.

I used v3.4-rc7-precise from 2012-07-28 until 2012-07-31.
After many suspend/resumes (~12) I was about to report
that it didn't show this bug, but finally a problem
occured that was similar but not exactly the same:

- with upstream v3.4-rc7-precise eventually after a
resume pulseaudio terminated (with nothing logged in
  either ~/.xesession-errors of /var/log/{kern.log,syslog}).
I found in alsamixer that the pcm device was muted!
Strangest thing is, after unmuting pcm, audio apps
worked, but directly through alsa -- pulseaudio was
  not restarted.

- with Ubuntu kernel 3.2.0-27.43, pulseaudio does _not_
terminate, and audio direct through alsa also does not
work (pasuspender is flaky too; but I have left X,
logged in on a vt, as root with 'sudo su - root',
checked pulseaudio was not running, tried aplay foo.wav,
[no sound], checked that pulseaudio had not been started
  [it had not]).

- New info: with Ubuntu kernel 3.2.0-27.43 today
2012-08-01, after several resumes, the display was
not restored (the computer was not locked-up, I
logged in with ssh to shut it down).
Clearly these kernels are having problems with
resume on this machine. (I haven't tried hibernation
because swap is encrypted, but I can disable that
for testing if necessary; hibernation has been
working with Ubuntu 10.04 on this machine.)
