posted two new patches about hardware bugs that seem to have gone into
the mainline Linux git yesterday.

Compile and try, anyone?

You are not alone in your frustration with university networks. Follow the 
advice above and try wicd. It might work better for you (which I don't 
understand, because in the end, wicd and network-manager are based on the same 
tools).
