After trying changing all elevator options, and many suggestions out
there, I've checked irqbalance. In /etc/default/irqbalance, I've changed
in my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit notebook, ENABLED from 0 to 1, as follows:

root@XXX4:/etc/default# cat irqbalance
#Configuration for the irqbalance daemon

#Should irqbalance be enabled?
ENABLED="1"
#Balance the IRQs only once?
ONESHOT="0"

All freezes stopped (of course when swapping occurs is definitely slower
than RAM). Only occasional sloppiness in the mouse/keyboards remained at
sustained swap operation moments.

My notebook is an Lenovo IdeaPad G530, with a CPU Intel Dual Core T3400
2.16GHz with 4 GB RAM.
