Here's some more info. We wiped and reloaded with Ubuntu Server 12.04.
Still get same install error. So we tried doing sudo apt-get -b source
snort. Of course it needed about a dozen packages first, but after that
(and 45 minutes later) it seemed to install properly. So something
appears to be wrong with the prebuilt pacakage. Maybe? I'm not sure.
