Well, the proxy is still used for some reason.

Maybe sudo is adding it back ? Verify with "sudo env". If that's the case,
open a root sheel, drop the variables and retry.

If sudo is not doing it, then there must some other way to configure a
proxy that python's httplib is respecting.

In any case the last strace still shows connections to localhost:

2583  connect(11, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(8080),
sin_addr=inet_addr("127.0.0.1")}, 16) = 0
