Not sure if this is to be considered a "workaround" or a "solution," but passing probe_mask=1 to the card in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base as described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.20/+bug/114522 produces sound for me.
