Just confirming that there have been no crashes for me after reverting
the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics version and locking it in synaptic
package manager as well (advice from other bug #32 linked to above).
The other workarounds that have the trackpad seen as a basic ps2 mouse
limit the functionality of the trackpad. But simply reverting the
version has solved the crashes. So as suggested by jmalter, it does seem
to be a regression in the current version.
