I tried the latest 3.6 kernel:
linux-headers-3.6.0-030600rc1_3.6.0-030600rc1.201208022056_all.deb
linux-headers-3.6.0-030600rc1-generic_3.6.0-030600rc1.201208022056_amd64.deb
linux-image-3.6.0-030600rc1-generic_3.6.0-030600rc1.201208022056_amd64.deb
linux-image-extra-3.6.0-030600rc1-generic_3.6.0-030600rc1.201208022056_amd64.deb
and it made no difference. The screen flickered a few times when I
connected an external monitor and then Compiz died, my laptop screen
became smaller than it is supposed to be and the external screen was
wavy (all as before).
