thanks for that. Yes I have found that I can use update manager to
update the kernel and it works fine. I am now using 3.2.0-29-generic. I
think/presume that the 'generic' kernels are always non-pae?

I suppose they took the non-pae kernel out of the LiveCd to save space?
But they could keep it on the LiveDVD surely, and change the message on
the LiveCD on finding non-pae system so that it directs user to try with
the LiveDVD? This seems to me a much better approach than just dropping
non-pae support in 12.10.
