- This system was working fine until Ubuntu 11.10:

+ 1) Installed Ubuntu 11.10, no problem.
+ 2) upgraded to 12.04. Result: the computer could not boot any more.
+ 3) created a separate /boot partition at the start of the disk, then 
reinstalled GRUB in it. Result: the computer is now able to boot.
  
- Since Ubuntu 12.04, it needs a separate /boot partition at the start of
- the disk.
