Hello Mark, after taking a look on your xorg.conf, I am closing here. This is clearly a configuration issue. Please execute the command mentioned previously. If you still experience problems then, please open a case in our support tracker ( https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ ).
Regarding autoconfiguration of the graphical interface, we know that there is room for improvement. This is also a goal for Gutsy, the next release of Ubuntu.
