Public bug reported: When the computer boots up, there is sound at the BIOS screen, so I know the hardware works, but when Ubuntu starts up, there is no sound.
Sound was working earlier today, but upon reboot, it didn't work. It could be due to a software update. When the sound problem first emerged, I turned off the computer manually (there is another bug that prevents me from shutting down, so I have to power down the computer and turn it back on to reboot), and restarted it, and while it was booting up, a quick message appeared stating: "HDA-Intel Codecs not found!" I did some research and found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/719437 and followed the instructions given and added the line: options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0x101 to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file. I turned off the computer, and restarted, and this time I got "HDA-Intel no codecs initialized" As per the instructions in the page linked, I edited the line I had added to options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0x102 I turned off, turned back on, and this time no message about the HDA- Intel codec appeared. The sound though still doesn't work. Also, youtube videos are suddenly running at 2 or 3 times the normal speed.
