After reading, I think I am reporting a duplicate of the "Adept couldn't open APT database" bug, confirmed and critical here:

I logged on to the console instead of the GUI, opened aptitude, and used it to install some programs - ABI word processor, Kubuntu restricted extras, nvidia-glx, and tuxcart. Upon boot to GUI, Adept still broken.
