Apparently there is a workaround available. I stumbled upon it quite by
chance.

It requires to modify the value of options snd-usb-audio index from 02
to -1 in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Now, since this is not a well known option, please make it configurable
via the usual settings/advanced settings panel.
