My problem occurred with a new installation of Mint 13 KDE. This option
did not appear in the drop down menu of this bugtracker.

During installation, I selected manual partitioning. My intent was to
do a new install of Linux Mint 13 KDE over the top of an existing
install of Linux Mint 12 KDE, and I made all the appropriate menu
selections. The resulting partition table looked like this:

sda1 27 Hidden NTFS WinRE
sda2 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
sda3 17 Hidden HPFS/NTFS
sda4 5 Extended
sda5 b W95 FAT32
sda6 83 Linux
sda7 82 Linux swap / Solaris
sda8 83 Linux
sda9 83 Linux

sda6 set to mount as /
sda8 set to mount as /usr
sda9 set to mount as /home

The only thing I did out of the ordinary was that I did not check any
partitions to be formatted. When I clicked OK, a notice box popped up
saying that I had not selected to format sda6 or sda8, and that all data
would be lost on those partitions. It allowed me to click "OK", or
"Cancel". I clicked OK.

The result was that my / partition was NOT formatted, but my /home
partition WAS formatted.

As this was an emergency install, and I have had zero problems in the
past, I violated my own rule and did not backup my /home partition prior
to the install. My most recent backup was in February, with a lot of
changes since then, so I am deeply saddened and disappointed. No one's
fault but my own. But I need to get this message out in the hope of
saving others from the same fate.
