Followed the provided instructions and upgraded ALSA using DKMS.

Unfortunately the latest ALSA package did not fix the problem, so I
uninstalled it.

I'm seriously considering returning the Toshiba laptop and exchanging it
for another model as I have also had problems with the special function
keys that control volume and screen brightness as well as enable/disable
the touchpad, bluetooth and wireless. Any recommendations on laptops
that have good compatibility with Linux/Ubuntu?  I know others that have
recently had good experiences and success with Gateway laptops.

Thanks for all of your prompt help and support and the tips and
recommendations your suggested - all very useful.
