Perhaps, it's a matter of little memory available.

After I set up some swap on the disk, I experience much less strange
crashes etc...

But I agree that this is not OK that there are segfaults and oops, even
if it is because of memory. From a good program design, I expect that
there must be no segfaults, etc.
