I have the same problem. Everytime that I change the channel or turn off the monitor (TV) sound stops working. I found a work around so I do not need to unplugg the hdmi cable. I go to another console (ctrl + alt + F2) and then back to graphic mode (ctrl + alt F7) and the audio is back. This should not happen since it was working fine on 11.10. When I upgraded to 12.04 it started.
