I get the same blank (green) screen when using the command line you
mention.  And yes, it happens with any video - sorry, I didn't check as
I've been able to play video files before but this was the first mp4.

I have worked out how I was able to play the mp4 file previously when I
was trying various different applications.  If I open the file with
xfmedia, it hangs.  I can then play the file with totem.  Totem will
also play other video files as long as xfmedia is left locked up.  If I
close xfmedia, totem will no longer play videos.  Seems strange that
invoking xfmedia causes totem to work, even though xfmedia itself will
not function properly.
