Since recent updates to Quantal which removed unity-2d, Unity will not run if
the hardware does not support 3d. On login I get the background image but no
launcher or panel.
.xsession-errors has the lines
compiz (unityshell) - Error: OpenGL 1.4+ not supported
compiz (unityshell) - Error: GL_ARB_fragment_program not supported
compiz (core) - Error: Plugin initScreen failed: unityshell
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to start plugin: unityshell
