This seems to be related to some of the inode information being invalid
in the overlayfs inodes:
$ ls -l
ls: cannot access yyy: No such file or directory
total 4
-rw-rw-r-- 1 mru mru 6 Aug 17 16:56 xxx
-????????? ? ? ? ? ? yyy
