Hi Michael, Thank you so much for a quick response. I have gone through the links you have sent me and I am surprised and delighted to say that the problem does not occur with xsane - only Simple Scan.
Hardware Compatibility The hardware is supported. The printer both prints and scans fine over the network and has been for some time. It is only on this occassion that the 'network change' element was introduced and caused a crash. This is reproducable. " what happens after the application goes grey?" It stays grey and I cannot interact with any of the button or menus. If I click it several times or try to use the window managers close (x) button, I am told that the application is not responding and that I can either wait for the application or quit. " have you tried xsane/scanimage?" Yes. Loosing a connection to the network printer in xsane does not cause the application to freeze in anyway. Even better, I can restore the connection and continue scanning. I will investigate the application as a possible alternative but Simple Scan is much better suited to our household in terms of usage and features. " you should probably read the following:" Again, thank you for the information. I should have clarified that the scanner works great for me in general. It is simply the network-disconnect that causes Simple Scan the problems. Anything else I can add?
