** Description changed:

I've been using zynaddsubfx for a while now with no problems, but the
past couple days, if I start it without Jack running (sending output to
alsa) it consistently crashes my computer. The only system changes I've
made have been routine updates. I get an error something like "cannot
connect to /dev/dsp," then the screen and everything freezes, even if
there is no other program running and therefore /dev/dsp is free. If
Jack is running, it causes no problems.
+
+ The relevant output produced by zynaddsubfx, just before it causes a lock-up,
looks something like this:
+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Sound Buffer Size = 256 samples
+ Internal latency = 5.8 ms
+ ADSynth Oscil. Size = 512 samples
+
+ ERROR: Cannot make a jack client (possible reasons: JACK server is not
+ running or jackd is launched by root and zynaddsubfx by another user.).
+
+ Using OSS instead.
+ ERROR - I can't open the /dev/dsp .
+ ALSA lib seq_hw.c:456:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: No such
file or directory
+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------
+
+ The system becomes completely "frozen" and a hard reset is required.
+
+ This bug seems to affect dapper, since some point in its development and
+ at present.
