To respond to my own comment/question of "this is just plain not a priority", it's _not_ a priority for me. I can deal with a little graphical/low-volume glitch, and I think most might just accept this is a "quirk of Ubuntu". I reported this initially as "yet another paper cut" style bug, although I can't remember if the Paper Cut program had been created at that point.
