The missing file is /usr/bin/metacity. I saw the same error message posted by jhosman. It says it's trying to run metacity, and I saw that the metacity package wasn't on my quantal system. So I installed metacity, and "unity --reset" ran successfully. (Ok, maybe still a bit bumpy, like any "unity --replace", but this error was gone.) Thanks.
