The missing file is /usr/bin/metacity. I saw the same error message
posted by jhosman. It says it's trying to run metacity, and I saw that
the metacity package wasn't on my quantal system. So I installed
metacity, and "unity --reset" ran successfully. (Ok, maybe still a bit
bumpy, like any "unity --replace", but this error was gone.) Thanks.
