When I removed the following lines from the file, the problem went away:

#+TODO: TODO PENDING NEXT NOW STEPS-TAKEN-AWAITING-RESOLUTION | DONE(!)
WAIT-FOR-NEXT-TIME(!) WAIT-UNTIL-TOMORROW (!\
