@lostinspacetime: the problem is that one has to know that s/he should do that (and how to do that). New(er) users and Ubuntu users that have always used jockey/Additional Drivers may not know to do that and then they would not be aware of the possibility of using the proprietary Nvidia driver. In a perfect world, nouveau would work as well as the proprietary driver, but it does not.
