This is a quick, but not particularly elegant, workaround:

Here is a transcript of the solution given in the video on the forum
linked in case the link goes dead:

1. Open /usr/share/applications as administrator.

2. Delete the desired icon, in this case gnumeric.

NOTE: This solution is permanent, the icon will not return if you reinstall the 
application.
Make a copy of the icon in a dedicated folder, 'deleted menu items' for 
example, as a backup.
