This kind of font issues has been discussed on ubuntuforums a while back. Most 
of the time it can be solved by either:
- switch theme(s)
- rename (or delete) the borked files: .config, .fontconfig, .gconf, .local, 
.gnome2

then logout/in (the previous hidden files are recreated cleanly)
