I should note that as of recently using "nomodeset" will allow the installer window to show up & installs can be done. Occasionally with nomodeset nothing happens, either a plymouth splash appears & never ends or just a black screen. Other users with various nvidia hardware report the same.
Also sometimes, (rare), just going to the options screen is enough & nomodeset doesn't have to used The recently 'released' Ubuntu GNOME Remix 12.10 iso's show the same behaviors.
