I have the same problem on a Fujitsu P3110 netbook with 12.04,Classic-
Gnome (no effects), 256G SSD, no nvidia card. After a fresh install
with 12.04.1, I got the problem a day or so later.
It has been running with no Xorg crash so far after the following
change:
(1) Created a xorg.conf with
sudo X :1 -configure
which creates a xorg.conf.new in the ~ directory. Then,
sudo cp ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
to copy it to the /etc/X11/ directory
(2) Inspecting the xorg.conf I saw that it had created Screen0, Screen1 &
Screen2 Sections. I removed the Screen1 & Screen2 sections. My xorg.conf now
looks as shown below:
