a fix for this seems to be issuing the command:
$export UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0
before loading the app, in a terminal.

Seems to still affect Guayadeque in Ubuntu Precise.
DISCLAIMER: If it matters, I am currently on Gnome-shell seeing this
problem, and haven't yet confirmed if the behavior is the same in Unity
- although I don't particularly see any reason why it *should* differ...
